Sean James started an apprenticeship in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services with HB Training in August 2008. The course normally takes 18 months to complete, however Sean’s impressive attitude and application to the programme meant that he achieved the qualification in just 12 months.
“I’ve always been interested in a career in the construction industry. I like keeping busy, being on my feet and doing manual tasks, so when I spotted an advert in the local paper for Construction Apprentices with HB Training, I applied. I must have impressed them because shortly after I was offered the job!”
“The delivery of the programme is organised in such a way that time is spent at the HB Training Centre, learning and practising key skills, combined with work placements at building companies where you get to practice what you have learnt for real and gain crucial evidence required for the qualification.”
“My first placement was at Danton Homes where I was working on a barn conversion building, learning how to do key jobs such as dealing with drainage, block paving, concreting and brick laying. I completed a three month placement at Danton before my second placement, which I did at Morrison Construction.”
“I remember the first time I went to work on a building site, I was slightly nervous at first, but everyone on site was friendly and helpful. In no time at all I felt really at ease in my new surroundings. I found it especially useful learning on site. If I was doing something wrong my work mates on the site would give me pointers and tips to make life easier, and more importantly, safer on site.”
“I always looked forward to going back to the HB Training Centre. The facilities for practising your skills are excellent and the staff are sound. It’s always great to catch up with the friends I’ve made on the apprenticeship programme and talk about our experiences on the work placements.”
“My advice to those considering an apprenticeship is to go for it! You get out of it what you put in. By working hard and listening to what you are taught, you can come away with a great deal. Perhaps even qualify earlier than planned and start earning - a bit like me!”
“I really enjoyed my training with HB and learnt so much. I am now employed by Morrison Construction, who I was placed with to complete my NVQ. I am now supervising projects and feel that HB Training have given me a great platform to begin my career in construction.”
